Summer 2013: This map was created by request from a graduate student for a project they were working on. I used the DEM obtained from metro to calculate the slope.
Hello my name is James Garrett Armstrong but you can call me Garrett. Welcome to where I hope to showcase my love of maps and all things GIS to the world.
As long as I can remember I've always loved maps, my dad used to work for a company that sold plotters and digitizing tables so I guess I've always been surrounded by GIS. I can remember him taking me to work with him and watching giant plotters draw wall sized maps and being fascinated by them; plus Airwolf from the 80's TV show was there, so there's that.
I first bridged my love of maps to GIS when I was getting my undergrad in Environmental Studies at UC Santa Cruz. I was floundering with what direction I wanted to take my education but the second I sat down at a computer and made my first map I knew this was my calling.
I am currently a GIS Graduate Certificate student at Portland State University and if you ask my girlfriend I can't shut up about it.
I love living in Portland and in what little spare time I have I enjoy craft beers, both making and drinking. I love rain. I also have a ravenous appetite for tech and internet culture. The only sport I follow is Timber's soccer. I've also discovered recently that I strangely enjoy coding and it appears to be one of my new hobbies. I am currently attempting to teach myself QGIS and PostGIS as well as continuing Python. Feel free to contact me with any resources concerning any of these things because I am always looking for more!
